The Clinic of Social and Family Medicine, (CSFM), University of Crete was founded to meet the needs of the local population and to promote research in rimary health care (PHC). The CSFM offers teaching and research opportunities to undergraduates, postgraduates and continued professional training in areas of PHC and has developed a formal postgraduate training program (MSc) in general practice/family medicine and PHC. Actively engaged in international and European research protocols, it has established itself as a pioneering -and unique for Greece- PHC educational and teaching center.
The The University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) is Canada’s leading Cardiovascular Centre. The UOHI’s Division of Prevention and Rehabilitation has been committed to disseminating world-class, evidence-based tobacco dependence treatment programs in Canada and internationally. The division has established a leading program of research and dissemination regarding clinical approaches to smoking cessation over the last 20 years. The UOHI has led the development of the “Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation” and a successful tobacco treatment network in Canada.
The Laboratory of Primary Health Care, General Practice and Health Services Research, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece is actively engaged in education and research and has established itself as a educational and teaching center for PHC mainly in Thessaly, Macedonia and Thrace Regions. The Laboratory offers teaching and research opportunities to undergraduates, postgraduates and continued professional training in areas of PHC, General Practice and Health Policy. A Primary Health Care Teachers’ Network with members from more than 120 Health Centers was established in order to support undergraduate teaching in the community. The Laboratory of Primary Health Care, General Practice and Health Services Research will support the training network in Thessaly, Macedonia and Thrace region in the TiTAN-Greece & Cyprus project.
University of Ioannina, Ioannina has included General Medicine as part of the undergraduate core curriculum since 2009. Since 2015, the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Ioannina has supported the establishment of a Research Unit for General Medicine and PHC to further enhance teaching and research among students and PHC providers. There is currently a number of on-going projects related to the implementation of effective interventions in PHC. The University of Ioannina Research Unit for General Medicine and PHC will support the training network in Ioannina region in the TiTAN Greece & Cyprus project.
The University of Nicosia is the largest institution of higher education in Cyprus. The University of Nicosia started the first medical school in Cyprus in 2011 by offering the St George’s, University of London graduate-entry MBBS through a franchise agreement. The Medical school runs a large family medicine program. The Medical School at the University of Nicosia, Cyprus will support the expansion of the training program in Cyprus.
The Primary Care Practice Based Research Network (PBRN) network in Greece to bring together University research activities and daily PHC practice. It is also the first network to embrace both public and private GP practices in translational research. The network contributes to research projects, continued training, and quality of care in PHC in Crete. PBRN members meet monthly and are involved in writing, submitting and implementing studies in collaboration with the Clinic of Social and Family Medicine.
The Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation (OMSC) is an evidence-based program to support the integration of evidence-based tobacco treatment into clinical settings that has been developed by the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. The OMSC is designed to systematically identify, provide treatment, and offer follow-up to all smokers seen in clinical practice settings including primary care, speciality clinics and hospitals. The OMSC network currently include more than 350 organizations/clinics in Canada.
Global Bridges is a worldwide science-based initiative to help healthcare providers to treat tobacco dependence while advocating for effective tobacco control policy. The goal of the Global Bridges initiative is to create and mobilize a global network of healthcare professionals and organizations dedicated to advancing effective tobacco dependence. The TiTAN Crete Program is funded by a Global Bridges grant.
